Review - The Goddess Test

The Goddess Test
Aimee Carter
Release - April 19th 2011
It's always been just Kate and her mom--and now her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear her mother won't live past the fall.

Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld--and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.

Kate is sure he's crazy--until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride, and a goddess.

If she fails...

I am so starting to love these books that have the mythology themes, they always end up being a beautifully written, and enjoyable book. I love how Aimee has set this book up with mystery and keeping you turning the pages.
Our main character is so lost with her life and you experience her grow into more throughout the book, as she lets go of certain parts of her life and actually grow into a life itself without being as afraid, become a strong woman is thoroughly enjoyable.

A great read and one that will keep me following as I await the second novel in the series.

Review - Mystify

Mystify
Artist Arthur
Released Jan 18th 2011

Sasha Carrington has grown up feeling like an outsider, and her parents are too concerned with scaling the Lincoln, Connecticut, social ladder to even notice her. They'd be really horrified to know about the supernatural abilities Sasha and her friends Krystal and Jake possess. But as part of the Mystyx, Sasha has found her place.
Now her parents have suddenly taken an interest in everything she does, and their timing couldn't be worse. Sasha's father wants her to become BFFs with snooty Alyssa Turner, who hates Krystal for stealing her boyfriend. Then there's Antoine Watson, the boy Sasha has liked forever, the boy her parents would never approve of. But with the dark side getting more dangerous by the day, and the Mystyx's own powers growing in unexpected ways, Sasha is facing choices that could affect her friends, her love life—and even her destiny….

I enjoyed the first book of this series so when I was offered a chance to read the second I was very excited to. You get reintroduced to the three Mystyx in this book as well as a new one that joins the group, as well as a bunch of shocking secrets that get revealed throughout the book.

Another well done book with great characters, However, I am upset to say that one of my favorite characters in this book disappears towards the end I am hoping to see a return to this character soon as she made a big change to the way the story was told.

Review - One Hundred Candles

One Hundred Candles
Mara Purnhagen
Released Feb 15th 2011

It's taken a long time for me to feel like a normal teenager. But now that I'm settled in a new school, where people know me as more than Charlotte Silver of the infamous Silver family paranormal investigators, it feels like everything is falling into place. And what better way to be normal than to go on a date with a popular football star like Harris Abbott? After all, it's not as if Noah is anything more than a friend….
But my new life takes a disturbing turn when Harris brings me to a party and we play a game called One Hundred Candles. It seems like harmless, ghostly fun. Until spirits unleashed by the game start showing up at school. Now my friends and family are in very real danger, and the door that I've opened into another realm may yield deadly consequences.

A fast read with a cool backstory, I love that she ghost hunts with her family, and she seems to enjoy it.. well minus the mishaps that keep happening.

Charlotte is a like-able character that has a different lifestyle than most that read about in current books, a nice change. Not only does she have the weird ghost hunting parents that make her weird and somewhat famous, but she seems to have the ever popular best friend that completes the story line.

There are two romances in this book, one that starts building from the beginning or atleast seems to be to me. And then the main relathionship in the book, which turns out all wrong just in time for her to learn and state her true feelings to boy 1. I love it... such a sweet tender moment when that happens.

Overall a quick enjoyable read that I would recommend.

Review - Cryer's Cross

Cryer's Cross
Lisa McMann
Released - Feb 8th 2011

The small town of Cryer’s Cross is rocked by tragedy when an unassuming freshman disappears without a trace. Kendall Fletcher wasn’t that friendly with the missing girl, but the angst wreaks havoc on her OCD-addled brain.

When a second student goes missing—someone close to Kendall’s heart—the community is in an uproar. Caught in a downward spiral of fear and anxiety, Kendall’s not sure she can hold it together. When she starts hearing the voices of the missing, calling out to her and pleading for help, she fears she’s losing her grip on reality. But when she finds messages scratched in a desk at school—messages that could only be from the missing student who used to sit there—Kendall decides that crazy or not, she’d never forgive herself if she didn’t act on her suspicions.

Something’s not right in Cryer’s Cross—and Kendall’s about to find out just how far the townspeople will go to keep their secrets buried.

Fantastic and creepy story that keeps you wanting more, as well as on the edge of your seat as you turn each page.

Kendall is your all around loveable character, with her slight problems you learn her quirks quickly. When her best friend disappears, you watch as she not only tries to cope but get her life back on track

Then you include two new friends and a new love... and this book ends up to be fantastic. The Creepy element, and finding out whats going on and how and whens of the issues winds up making the story even better.  A fantastic read.

Spotlight - Darby Karchut

Today I have the pleasure of having Darby Karchut stop by the blog and talk to us a bit about her road to be published. Thank you so much for taking the time to stop in and chat with us Darby.

1. Tell us about your road to publication of Griffin Rising - what did you find to be the most difficult?

This is going to sound bizarre, but I had never written anything until I wrote Griffin Rising. I never wanted to be a writer – it’s much too hard a career, in my opinion. And the chances of getting published are at the let’s-check-the-weather-channel-and-see-if-hell-has-frozen-over-yet level.

Oh, but I love books. I read all the time; all genres, but mostly fantasy: J.R.R.Tolkien, Lloyd Alexander, Neil Gaiman, C.S. Lewis, Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, Cassandra Clare, Holly Black, Ted Dekker, Rick Riordan, and my current favorites: John Flanagan and James Dashner. And maybe the old saying really is true: you read and you read, and then, one day, you throw up a book.

I guess that’s what happened to me.

I began writing Griffin’s tale mid-July of 2009 and finished it in November. Then I started on the sequel. Along the way, I studied every blog, every magazine article, and every book on the noble craft. And I re-wrote my first book over and over again. Some sections have seen well past thirty revisions. A circuitous route, but it worked for me. Write the book. Then go out and learn HOW to write. And write the book again. Repeat until your nose bleeds.

In February of 2010, I started querying agents and publishers. After 102 queries, I was offered a publishing contract from Twilight Times Books (and I just learned that you really should stop after thirty rejections. Sheesh. NOW they tell me!) Of course, there is no substitute for hard work and tenacity, but I am fully aware of the fact that I just happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right book for my publisher.

The most difficult part was staying true to my vision. Everyone kept telling me that a story about a positive father-and-son type of relationship will never sell, especially in the YA fantasy genre. But I kept going, inspired by Toni Morrison’s statement: write the book you want to read. So I did.

2. How did you come up with the story behind the book?

One day, I was digging around in my favorite used book store and discovered a book about legends from the Middle Ages. Obsessed with all things medieval, I thumbed through it and came across a short description of a lowly caste of guardian angels that were said to control the ancient elements of Earth, Fire, Wind and Water. Not being particularly interested in angels, I put the book back and forgot all about it.

A few days later, while running the trails in the foothills near my home, the idea of writing a story about clandestine warriors-angels, who live among us while training their young apprentices, just roared up behind me and slammed into my head. Like an avalanche, you might say. And thus Griffin, Basil, and all the other Terrae Angeli were born.

I wish I could have told them no. Go away. Stop bothering me. But Griffin simply followed me home. He’s a surprisingly easy houseguest, by the way.

3. Do you use inspirations tools/special places to write?

Since I also teach full time (junior high social studies), I have taught myself to write whenever I have a fifteen minute block of time: during lunch, after school, evenings, weekends and holidays. And I never watch TV. I do, however, run at least four or five miles every day. Best time to work out plot problems! That’s been my life for the last two years: teach, write, run, and try to spend a few minutes a day with my uncomplaining husband.

4. Now that you've been introduced to the book blogging community, what’s your opinion of them?

I am constantly blown away by the passion, honesty, and professionalism of this amazing group of people. I’ve made wonderful friends and colleagues over the last few months. I think bloggers, especially in the YA genre, write some incredibly insightful reviews. Sure, I wince when I get a less than favorable review, but I always learn something to help me become a better writer.

5. What can we expect from you next?

The manuscript for the next book in the series, Griffin’s Fire, is finished and the book will be published April 15, 2012. Right now, I am drafting the third book of a possible four book series.

I’m also in the final editing stages of another urban fantasy set in the same city as my Griffin and Basil series (think Irish warriors, the mythical Tuatha De Danaan, who clandestinely hunt monsters) In fact, one of the characters in this new series makes a brief appearance in Griffin’ Fire.

Thank you, ReaganStar, for spotlighting me and reviewing my debut novel. I had a terrific visit and really enjoyed these questions!

Review - Griffin Rising

Griffin Rising
Darby Karchut
Release June 15th 2011
The only creature who can harm an angel is another angel.

Armed with the power to control the ancient elements of Earth and Fire, sixteen year old Griffin is determined to complete his apprenticeship and rise to the rank of Terrae Angeli.

But first, he must overcome a brutal past if he is to survive in this world.
Will the perseverance of his mentor and the love of a mortal girl give Griffin the courage he needs to triumph over the monster still haunting him?
I have to say after reading what this book was about, I was only mildly interested but i love angel stories so I had to give it a try. Much to my suprise and happiness the blurb about this book does nothing for it.  A fantastic storyline and amazing characters that you empathize with immediately.

You meet Griffin at the early age of 13, under the eye of his "mentor" which immediately tears at your heartstrings seeing what poor Griffin has to deal with. He then gets switched to another mentor and wow, does the story take off from there.

Fin becomes a older teenager with something to prove, he grows into himself and out of his shyness and fears. He falls in love and makes you feel like your part of that love. Darby does an amazing job describing events, loves, and the bond between characters as well as an amazing backdrop of the Terrae Angeli. A well written book and one that I am looking forward to reading what happens next. Thank you Darby for sending me a review copy and surprising me with this story.

Both of these books are available for trade, if interested please either email me or leave a comment, also What's Your opinions on these books I would love to hear your thoughts!

WHY CAN’T YOU CHOOSE WHAT YOU FORGET . . .  AND WHAT YOU REMEMBER?  There’s a lot Zoey would like to forget. Like how her father has knocked up his twenty-four- year old girlfriend. Like Zoey’s fear that the whole town will find out about her mom’s nervous breakdown. Like darkly handsome bad boy Doug taunting her at school. Feeling like her life is about to become a complete mess, Zoey fights back the only way she knows how, using her famous attention to detail to make sure she’s the perfect daughter, the perfect student, and the perfect girlfriend to ultra-popular football player Brandon.  But then Zoey is in a car crash, and the next day there’s one thing she can’t remember at all—the entire night before. Did she go parking with Brandon, like she planned? And if so, why does it seem like Brandon is avoiding her? And why is Doug—of all people— suddenly acting as if something significant happened between the two of them? Zoey dimly remembers Doug pulling her from the wreck, but he keeps referring to what happened that night as if it was more, and it terrifies Zoey to admit how much is a blank to her. Controlled, meticulous Zoey is quickly losing her grip on the all-important details of her life—a life that seems strangely empty of Brandon, and strangely full of Doug.

Zara collects phobias the way other girls collect Facebook friends. Little wonder, since life’s been pretty rough so far. Her father left, her stepfather just died, and her mother’s pretty much checked out. Now Zara’s living with her grandmother in sleepy, cold Maine so that she stays “safe.” Zara doesn’t think she’s in danger; she thinks her mother can’t deal.
Wrong. Turns out that guy she sees everywhere, the one leaving trails of gold glitter, isn’t a figment of her imagination. He’s a pixie—and not the cute, lovable kind with wings. He’s the kind who has dreadful, uncontrollable needs. And he’s trailing Zara.
With suspense, romance, and paranormal themes, this exciting breakout novel has readers rapidly turning the pages.

Review - Delirium

Delirium
Lauren Oliver
Release - February 1st 2011

There was a time when love was the most important thing in the world. People would go to the end of the earth to find it. They would tell lies for it. Even kill for it. Then, at last, they found the cure. Now, everything is different. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the government demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Haloway has always looked forward to the day when she'll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy. But then, with only ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable
A Dystopian type romance that caught me off guard, and reeled me in. Lauren Oliver does an amazing job with her character descriptions and story lines with a smooth flow from the begging to end of the story. We meet Lena, who seems like the happy person, till her friend tells her a few simple words, things slowly sink in and you see Lena let go of the way life should be as told to her all her life and learns of what life really is. She falls in love, and learns of all the ups and downs that come with it.

A fantastic story that will captivate you and make you feel what she goes through each and every moment, learning who Lena is and what makes her tick... not to mention having Lena learn who she is herself and how much stronger she really is than shes portrayed. I would certainly recommend this to you, and look forward to getting a copy for my own bookshelf.

Review - Here Lies Bridget

Here Lies Bridget
Paige Harbison
Release - January 18th 2011

Bridget Duke is the uncontested ruler of her school. The meanest girl with the biggest secret insecurities. And when new girl Anna Judge arrives, things start to fall apart for Bridget: friends don't worship as attentively, teachers don't fall for her wide-eyed "who me?" look, expulsion looms ahead and the one boy she's always loved—Liam Ward—can barely even look at her anymore.
When a desperate Bridget drives too fast and crashes her car, she ends up in limbo, facing everyone she's wronged and walking a few uncomfortable miles in their shoes. Now she has only one chance to make a last impression. Though she might end up dead, she has one last shot at redemption and the chance to right the wrongs she's inflicted on the people who mean the most to her.
And Bridget's about to learn that, sometimes, saying you're sorry just isn't enough….
This sounded like another Mean Girls type of book, and honestly I almost stopped reading it about 90 pages in... I was thinking to myself OMG this girl never stops bitching and whining... however, for some reason I kept reading on and I am glad that I did. This story turned into an excellent redemption story allowing the reader to get the chance to see what happens in "Limbo" and watching the Main Character Bridget learn how she has treated everyone in her life. Giving her a last chance to rectify what she has done and a chance to get a few final moments with her love.

Cute story, with a redemption in the end definitely worth reading.

Review - The Lipstick Laws

The Lipstick Laws
Amy Holder
Release - April 4th 2011

At Penford High School, Britney Taylor is the queen bee. She dates whomever she likes, rules over her inner circle of friends like Genghis Khan, and can ruin anyone's life with a snap of perfectly manicured fingers. Just ask the unfortunate few who have crossed her.

For April Bowers, Britney is also the answer to her prayers. April is so unpopular, kids don't even know she exists. But one lunch spent at Britney's table, and April is basking in the glow of popularity.

But Britney's friendship comes with a high price tag. How much is April willing to pay?
Similar to Mean Girls, you get to meet the main character, a girl who is insecure as she returns to high school, after the loss of her best friend who has just moved away.
Starting off with a lie immediately to the "Queen Bee" you know this will come back and bite here by the end of the story. This story shows the ups and downs of being on both sides of the popularity fence, the no one, and the popular crowd.

You watch the main character April grow through the story from being no one.. to having it all.. to losing it all again, to meeting the "has beens" and getting revenge to just learning to be happy with what she has. A small romance blossoms which at first I thought was cute, but then felt this guy was just another "user" and felt she should of ended up with the guy who liked her through the whole story, however, was shocked to find out that it didn't end that way.

A new way to tell a classic storyline, with great descriptive characters, and a smooth storyline.
