Kelley York Interview - Author of Hushed

1. What inspired you to get into writing?
I’ve been writing for ages, since I was a kid. But art always took my primary focus. A few years ago, I got really burned out on drawing. Though when it did, I really needed something to fill the creative void I felt, so writing is what I dove into.

2. Who are some of your favorite writers or pieces of work?
Sean Olin, Maggie Stiefvater, Hannah Moskowitz... I admire all of them for their writing and stories. Growing up, I loved books like Peter S. Beagle’s THE LAST UNICORN and lots of fantasy. Which is odd, because now that I’m older, I rarely ever read fantasy at all anymore.

3. Do you have a favorite spot to write?
Not really. I love curling up in bed to write, though I don’t have a laptop of my own anymore. Most of my writing is done at my day job on lunch or during breaks. I’ll put my headphones on and try to ignore everything while getting out a couple hundred words here and there. Not ideal, but it’s worked thus far.

4. Are there tips and tools that you use when writing? (ie photos, quotes, music)
Music! Definitely music. Sometimes I’ll Google image search something (scenery, mainly) to get a better feel for the characters’ surroundings and pick up on little details. Otherwise, it’s just me, a Word document, and a playlist fitted to whatever I’m working on at that moment.

5. With Holiday season among us, what are some of your favorite new or old traditions?
I’m really particular about my Christmas tree! Every year, we have a color scheme. It was blue and silver for the last few years, then this time, we decided on black and pink. I love laying under the tree and staring up into it at all the lights, too.

'Kelley York delivers in this impressive debut. I was at the edge of my
seat waiting to see what would happen next! Bottom line, this was
unputdownable!!!' --- YA Fantasy Guide ---

'How exciting that we live in a time when gay teen protagonists can be
just as screwed up as straight ones -- and their stories just as creepy!'

Author Bio:

Kelley was born and raised in central California, where she still resides
with her lovely wife, daughter, and an abundance of pets. (Although she
does fantasize about moving across the globe to Ireland.) She has a
fascination with bells, adores all things furry - be them squeaky, barky
or meow-y - is a lover of video games, manga and anime, and likes to
pretend she's a decent photographer. Her life goal is to find a real
unicorn. Or maybe a mermaid.

Within young adult, she enjoys writing and reading a variety of genres
from contemporary with a unique twist, psychological thrillers,
paranormal/urban fantasy and horror. She loves stories where character
development takes center stage.

Hushed - Synopsis:

He's saved her. He's loved her. He's killed for her.

Eighteen-year-old Archer couldn't protect his best friend, Vivian, from
what happened when they were kids, so he's never stopped trying to protect
her from everything else. It doesn't matter that Vivian only uses him when
hopping from one toxic relationship to another - Archer is always there,
waiting to be noticed.

Then along comes Evan, the only person who's ever cared about Archer
without a single string attached. The harder he falls for Evan, the more
Archer sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is.

But Viv has her hooks in deep, and when she finds out about the murders
Archer's committed and his relationship with Evan, she threatens to turn
him in if she doesn't get what she wants...And what she wants is Evan's
death, and for Archer to forfeit his last chance at redemption.
